Our Mission
At Castro Clay, our mission is to provide a supportive and collaborative environment for artists of all levels to learn, create and showcase their work.
Please read this before booking a class!
General Info
We will be offering a selection of these classes throughout the year. Our class schedule will rotate through these classes each session.
Each class will come with the appropriate tools and materials. 1-time classes will be supplied with tools and clay. 6-Week courses will be supplied with clay, basic tools, materials, equipment, and glazes.
6-Week courses students will meet once a week on the respective day/time for a total of 6 sessions. Each session is 2.5 hours long. Each class builds upon the last, so it is highly recommended to attend all classes in the session.
Open studio hours are available for 6-Week course students. Students can use these independent work hours outside of class time to get additional practice.
It's very important to show up ~5 minutes early so that class can start on time. One late student can slow down the pace of the entire class.
If you want to take the class with a group, please make sure there is enough space in the class before booking. All of our classes have a maximum capacity of 8 students.
We reserve the right to cancel a class if the class does not have at least 6 participants. We will notify participants and offer credit if possible at least one week prior to the class start date.

How to be Prepared for Class
Students are encouraged to come prepared with the following supplies:
- Comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty (most everything will wash out)
- An apron or full sized towel
- Closed toed shoes
- A hair tie/clip for those with longer hair
- Short finger nails! Long nails can make working with clay difficult
- Leave precious and valuable jewelry at home, so it doesn't get lost
- 6-week course students are encouraged to purchase their own tools
1 Time Classes
1-Time Wheel
Come get your hands muddy in our 1-Time Wheel class. This 2 hour lesson is meant for those with little to no experience on the wheel. You'll be carefully guided by our instructor to make your very own piece of pottery and even get to pick the color of glaze at the end the class. This class is for students 16 and older.
Students will get to fire up to 2 pieces from this class. The finished work is usually ready in about 4 - 6 weeks.

1-Time Hand-Building
Come learn how to hand-build in our 1-Time Hand-Building class. This 2 hour lesson is meant for those with little to no experience with ceramics. You'll be led by our instructor to make your own hand-built projects without any stress of the wheel. The possibilities are endless! Students will get to pick the color of glaze at the end the class. This class is for students 16 and older.
Students will get to fire up to 3 pieces from this class. The finished work is usually ready in about 4 - 6 weeks after.

6-Week Courses
Intro to Wheel
In this introductory six week course, students will learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing to make a variety of ceramic vessels - but mostly cylinders. Each week will cover a variety of material including throwing, trimming, surface design, and glazing. Students will be encouraged to engage with each other and the Castro Clay community. Students will develop proper studio etiquette, cleanliness, and safety.

Intro to Hand-Building
In this introductory six week course, students will learn the fundamentals of hand-building to make a variety of functional & sculptural creations. Each week will cover a variety of material including pinching, coiling, using slabs, creating surface design and glazing. Students will be encouraged to engage with each other and the Castro Clay community. Students will develop proper studio etiquette, cleanliness, and safety.

Intermediate Wheel
Students that have demonstrated a level of proficiency with the wheel, but want to take their work to the next level are perfect for this class! Students should be able to comfortably center and make a 1.5lb cylinder before taking this class. More advanced concepts of form and shape will be explored such as bottleneck vases and lidded jars. This class is not recommended for beginners.

Throwing Bigger
If you have ever wanted to make bigger pots, this class is for you! This class is for students that have demonstrated an adept level of proficiency with the wheel but want to make bigger vessels. Students should be able to comfortably center and make a 2lb cylinder before taking this class. Throwing taller, wide platters, and stacked forms will be covered. This class is not recommended for beginners.

Kids 1-Time Clay
A clay class made for the little ones! Your child will learn to make and mold creations out of clay, paint, and/or choose a glaze. The class will cover hand-building techniques such as slabs and pinch pots.

A 6-Week course designed for children! Your child can choose from hand-building or wheel in this class that will teach them how to create with clay. Each student will take home multiple projects.
